Back in 1959, when Silicon Valley development began to encroach on their apricot and cherry orchards, Leo and Evelyn Trentadue went looking for a more farmer friendly neighborhood north of San Francisco. Like Luther Burbank a century earlier, they discovered, "... a place most blessed by Nature of all the Earth," the historic Heart's Desire Nursery in the Alexander Valley.

Following the traditions of their ancestors in Tuscany, Italy, the Trentadues planted classic Italian grapevines such as Sangiovese and Carignane, among the first in America to do so. Living and working the land, they learned that their microclimate (the climate of their vineyard) and soil were also suited for hearty red wines such as Zinfandel, Merlot, Petite Sirah and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Trentadue's traditional approach to winemaking -- extracting plenty of flavor and intensity -- paid off with a growing reputation as a cellar of Big Reds.

Enhancing that reputation is wine made from vines averaging 115 years old, called Old Patch Red. In 1984, Trentadue Winery was the first Californian winery to release a wine made from 100% Sangiovese grapes (the main grape used in Chianti from Italy). The 1993 Sangiovese was awarded a Gold Medal and "Best of Class" at the 1995 Sonoma County Harvest Fair. In 1997, the Trentadue 1993 Carignane repeated the performance of the Sangiovese with a Gold medal and "Best of Class" at the West Coast Wine Competition. Today, the grapes farmed from the Trentadue Vineyards are sought by some of the finest wineries in California for their best wines.
