The 2007 ClaudeVal is a generous bottling, ripe with vivid fruit (plum, raspberry) that evolves into soft spice aromas and light coffee, the faintest perception of violets. Fruity, rich, and round, it finishes smooth and well-balanced, highlighted by notes of licorice and well-made red vermouth (e.g. Antica Carpano.) Primarily grown on clay and limestone with gravel, only the Carignan is from schist soils. Aged in stainless steel vats, there is no presence of oak here, just pure, enjoyable fruit. 50% Grenache, 20% Merlot, 15% Carignan, 15% Cinsault. Drink now through 2011.
Made by Paul Mas, of his eponymous domaine, as well as La Forge Estate in Herault, Languedoc, perhaps the finest appellation for high-quality, affordable wines from France. Michel Chapoutier recently appeared in the region, producing the same level of quality at wallet friendly prices.
