Onix Priorat 2006
Although Spain is well known for great value, its Priorat region is more widely recognized for big, lush, powerhouse reds selling in the upper priced echelon. Onix, a 50/50 blend of unoaked Garnacha and Carignan from 50+ year old vines, is a notable exception to that rule. More about elegance and grace than sheer power, its nose is redolent with aromas of raspberry, minerals, flowers and spice. Nicely balanced with layers of bright and juicy red berries, traces of anise with a little earthiness and light tannin, it develops beautifully with a half hour or more of air. One heck of a nice bottle for 12 bucks, at this low price it’s a worthy candidate to consider for a case buy to enjoy now and over the next couple of years. Wine Spectator Polished and focused, this red shows tart cherry and cranberry flavors, framed by firm tannins and crisp acidity. Drink now through 2010. 3,000 cases imported. Score: 85. —Thomas Matthews, April 30, 2008. Customers who purchased this item also bought:
