Mer Soleil Silver Unoaked Chardonnay 2006
I have to admit I missed the boat on this last year … the initial release sold out quickly. I like to think I learn from my mistakes, so we brought in cases of the 2006 from the get-go. Beautiful jasmine, floral and mineral notes greet your nose upon pouring. Next, the palate is saturated with clean, crisp unadulterated Chardonnay. No oak is used, so the purity of citrus, pear, apple and guava is clearly delineated. Winemaker Charlie Wagner II then succeeds in creating a supple finish. A remarkable Chardonnay deserving of a spot at your table.

Probably the most expensive unoaked Chard out there, this is a stunning wine, showing the laserlike purity and bright acids that this northwestern part of the Highlands coaxes from the grapes. The brilliantly illuminated flavors range from limes and kiwis to green apples, peaches and guavas. The finish is dry, but with a honeyed unctuousness that could be a touch of botrytis.
